Wreckless Eric makes a swing through the eastern and midwest states these next few weeks, and if you haven't had the chance to catch this 'Donovan of Trash' slash his way through his cavalcade of Stiff pop hits, then you really need to make plans. From his relentless touring and recording schedule in the 70s with labelmates Nick Lowe and Elvis Costello, Eric's got more than a handful of true classics under his belt. Always the outspoken character, his uncanny ability of weaving his dark humor into these perfectly simple songs is truly heartwarming (or maybe heart-worming is more appropriate). While his recently released album, Bungalow Hi contributes the batch of new songs that take up about half of his set, his charming storytelling between songs really freshens up the typical live music experience. Although it may slow things down a little too much for some, the guy's been to the bottom of the barrel of life and back, and his anecdotes aren't merely someone reminiscing their glory days, but clever little reflections of life in a much uglier world than what it once was. Although he may save it for the end of the show, his most golden songs like "Whole Wide World," "Take the Kash," and "Reconnez Cherie" are so much better live than on record, it will be worth the cost of admission for those 15 minutes alone. It's completely rejuvenating music from the most honest and hardest to reach part of the soul, and you owe it to yourself (in lieu of therapy) to check him out. Catch Wreckless Eric Saturday at Maxwell's in Hoboken New Jersey with the Impulse, and on the following Thursday and Friday in Chicago and Austin, Texas. Check out "Whole Wide World" HERE...
