Wednesday, at the Comet Tavern in Seattle there will be quite a whiplashing hullabaloo. The Rotten Apples, a Seattle band, haven't seen too much action since their debut on Empty Records, in 2000. The girl-fronted band soulfully delves into a grungy ewer without spilling the cheese, and as paired with the other acts tonight, they'll certainly keep things interesting as they fit perfectly between the others' effecting polarity. The Coconut Coolouts feature members of the Charming Snakes, but are more beer-bong orientated than the latter. Their song “Party Jail” stumbles into budget rock territory in subject matter, rather than sonically, but features the staple handclaps and rolling basslines that's driven many of us to frenzied beer-dousing freakouts we used to get from the almighty Mashers, back when drugs were cheaper. Sometimes dressing in banana suits, these guys are as serious about partying as they are about potassium intake. They're certain to get the crowd well lubed for the rest of the night.
Rob Vasquez should be, by now, a household name. For over two decades his slough-slugging brand of rock'n'roll has shit-shined it's way into the stoned hearts of creeps worldwide. Fronting such acts as The Night Kings to the more recent Right On, his earmark guitar dirge (“shit-o-fonic” in his own words) is at home in an addled gutter of lowlife living. Now at the overly-ripe age of fifty, there's no sign of him pruning his muddy laments into middle-aged retrospective balladry––a sure sign of a waning deity. His newest act, Nice Smile, should live up to it's precursors. Check out some of their songs here.
