Attention Harlequinn paperback fans: if you'd put down that dog-eared copy of Good Housekeeping for a few minutes, you'll find that Indianapolis' favorite sons, the Romance Novels, can become your newest solace in disjointed musical gracelessness better than that useless pamphlet could ever provide. Slapping themselves around Indiana for quite a while now, this Saturday December 2nd, they mark their territory at an in-store performance at Downtown Records in Lafayette, Indiana. Throwing 'progress' to the wind, their fundamental and disgustingly innocent slant on rock'n roll music is further proof that if your clever little black heart is in the right place, no matter what noise emits from it, it's bound to make a lasting impression. Obviously taking cues from the 90s budget-rock underlords of the lo-fi sound (like the Statics, Brentwoods, Fingers, etc.) a la their buddies the Sneaky Pinks, the Romance Novels offer an honest and ragged thrust of non-pretentious soul which seems to always evade the ground-breaking direction most modern musical units go for. Just three regular dudes who hold pockets full of their Hoosier musical heritage, and like to bang it out in your face like it's nobody's frisky business. The bass-less triple vocal front they deal has it's advantages obviously, and even the tuned-out tenderness in songs like "Peggy Sue" and "Bikini Beach" shine through like unearthed gems of the early 80s DIY movement on their greatest strides. Hopefully the music will find it's way onto a record in some form in the near future, but in the meantime, check out and download four great tracks right HERE and see for yourself. Chicago's longest-running primordial pop stalwarts MOTO headline the show, and should easily fill in the gaps left by the Romance Novels' sporadic affections beforehand. Unlimited bra-snapping, skirt-chasing, and "Ready, Aim, 1-2-3-4's" are sure to ensue with Mr. Caporino in town, so please send any wayward girls looking for salvation straight to this show, in lieu of Sunday School sessions anywhere in the tri-state area.
