This Saturday at the Mainstage in bountiful Green Bay, the heavens will open up and rain down some of the most beautifully ugly music you're likely to see in one midwestern evening. Fresh off their Gonerfest appearance, Cheveu are the newest French conquerors to venture north, in the fine tradition of Marquette and La Salle. As reviews pour in from their other US shows, they should make one of the most memorable impressions in years, so make sure you do not miss their uniquely alluring set, and watch close as everyone takes notes. Cheveu plays Friday in Chicago also, so try and catch them as many times as possible for maximum exposure. Pink Reason is another musical anomaly that's been building momentum for quite a while now, and the way he morosely captivates the unsettling tone and dark stare of cold-wave DIY drone is truly frightful. Using subtle synth and acoustic guitar ambience, this one-man psychedelic troubador is destined to rise above the rest of the noisemongers creeping around Wisconsin's home recording caverns. With recent news of a debut LP on the revived Siltbreeze label, it's only a matter of time before Pink Reason is fully recognized as a powerful mysterious force of musical delirium. Using secret government control sound frequencies that disrupt your stomach muscles and make your skin clammy with fear, you'll be lucky to come out of the experience feeling only slightly drugged out and disoriented. Tyvek from Detroit are another perfect fit for tonight, and their unusually addictive lo-fi musical surgery of stereotypes should be the perfect compliment to the rest of the show. Their surreal vibe and clever pop tunes are the ultimate addition to this already overwhelming bill of impressive new bands. Algoma, Wisconsin's favorite dudes, Hue Blanc's Joyless Ones, are really doing their own thing as well as anyone else on tonight's stage, but they are indeed the first to have a full-length LP under their belt. Just released on P.Trash about two months ago, their album is a wrecklessly resilient slab of uncut Midwest purity in the form of rock'n roll music, which only grows deeper and weirder the more times you play it. Almost country-ish at points and drunkenly tubular throughout, their perfectly off-kilter, oddly-tuned harmonies sometimes tow the same path the Black Lips have used so well. You'll find yourself bewildered with delight as their songs pull you along in a direction you may not be familiar with, yet irresistable nonetheless. Their dual drummer set-up is no fluke either, and the rest of the rhythm department is in no need of overhaul anytime soon, regardless of the mesmerizing cacophony that's created within. Be sure to pick up their debut 7" on Trickknee Records as well, if you haven't already. The band should have copies of their LP for sale at the show as well, but they don't (band copies sold out), so check most of the fine mailorders on our front page, as they should have them in stock.
