This weekend at Cafe Bourbon Street in Columbus, Ohio, come witness the Times New Viking record release soiree, featuring close to three generations of Ohio underground gold. Celebrating their new release on Siltbreeze, Present the Paisley Reich, the TNV crew have amassed a corpulent bag of Midwest talent to sate the dry stretch of live music so common in February. With younger acts such as Sword Heaven and Clockcleaner starting off the evening, one thing becomes evident right away, an unwavering aversion to noisy lo-fidelity punk that strays so far from it's boundaries, that it's morphed into it's own salivating beast, eager to trap the curious and repel the conventional. Towing along the equally fascinating congruent local contingent of Psychedelic Horseshit with legendary no-fi maestros Mike Rep and the Quotas, this is destined to be quite the amalgamation of modern vs. primitive sounds coexisting within the same bizarre trappings that you're likely to see anytime soon. Mr. Rep was the guy responsible for recording the TNV debut LP, Dig Yourself, also on Siltbreeze in 2005, and has effectively nestled his way into the ball of noise he so valiantly pioneered back in the mid 1970s with his underground hits like "Rocket To Nowhere," and "Mama Was a Schitzo, Daddy Was A Vegetable Man." Truly a Midwest icon that needs to be exposed to more of the seething masses, Mike Rep defined a method of recording and production that throws technical prowess to the wind and relies solely on spontaneity and true soul, which has influenced the current crop of weird wave wastoids to no end. And what could be more welcome at this gathering than the Cheater Slicks, you ask? Not much. With over 20 years of sludge-scraped sonic psychosis under their belt, this low-profile but magnanimously adored trio of atonal heathens brings the desolation and regret to modern music that's truly inimitable and virtually incorporated into the underground. Gathering this illustrious assortment of off-centered souls for one night seems too good to be true, and you have to hand it to Times New Viking, who continue to indulge their growing legions of omnivorous fans with shards of white noise, raked over impossible melodies and forgotten keyboard hooks left for dead in the early 90s. Check out Times New Viking's new stuff HERE, and if you're anywhere near Columbus, don't let yourself fuck up and miss this spectacle of salacious sounds this Saturday at Cafe Bourbon Street.
