Since they formed in late 2000, The Ponys have defied any tag put on them in the loosely defined garage rock arena. Their output has eluded any genre corner painting and both their debut and sophomore releases on In The Red have offered up uniquely varying songs that go from spirited neo-new romantic sonance to mind-crushing psychedelic squawks that leave others far behind. After signing with Matador Records this past summer, The Ponys headed to New York to record their third album. The result is "Turn The Lights Out," the first record since their lineup change last year that now includes former 90 Day Men member, Brian Case. Officially released today, it pulls from a wider range of song stylings that delves deeper into their unrivaled brand of pop psychedelia with barrages of guitar noise, quick tempoed intros, sped-up tape loops and sweetly delivered sour lyrics that amalgamate a modern take on a classic formula. Their official release party kicks off next Saturday, March 31 at the Logan Square Auditorium in Chicago with The Black Lips and then they head out on a US tour. You can listen to a full streaming preview and purchase "Turn the Lights Out" directly from Matador Here.
